CERN training for the TE-VSC-SCC section
CERN, 12 and 14 February 2025
Building 30, room 7-010
Preparation steps
- Download the latest MolFlow (as of writing this, Molflow 2.9.27 – choose your OS among the "binaries"). For the tutorial, the easiest is to run the Windows version. Mac or Linux builds are available from the page, but it might be possible that you need to build the solution from source. Note that for each OS, you have instructions on how to install it, below the download links. Check if it runs on your desktop/laptop: if not, contact the tutors (Marton Ady and Petar Trifunović), or get in touch with us on the forum.
- Download the source files (geometry) from the links below.
- It is recommended to have a mouse, as it's difficult to work with a 3D editor with only a trackpad.
Training structure
The training consists of two parts:
-
General Molflow training:
- A guided exercise demonstrating the user interface and the basic functionalities, while calculating the effective pumping speed of a NEG cartridge.
- An excercise for individual work, with the goal of solving a more realistic accelerator vacuum problem, also dealing with some common modeling issues.

- Handouts containing instructions: 1_SCC_2025_general_molflow_tutorial.pdf
- Intro presentation about Monte Carlo simulations: SCC_2025_molflow_intro.pptx (it will be presented, you don't need to download)
-
Molflow for sputtering simulations:
- A basic example of sputtering simulations, including basic shape modeling in molflow and data post-processing.
- An excercise for individual work with a more complex RF-cavity geometry.
- An example demonstrating the influence of background gasses on sputtering simulations.
